Since 1983, The Learning Center/House of Connections has empowered adults for effective personal lives, productive employment, and positive contribution to the community by providing free adult education classes to residents from the North Lawndale and Little Village communities of Chicago.

Position Summary

The Learning Center (TLC) is looking for a part-time Front Office Receptionist. TLC’s Receptionist should possess a passion for and commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of adult learners from these neighborhoods. The Receptionist should be an extremely self-motivated person that will help support administration, record maintenance, student services, and building/grounds.

The Receptionist is responsible for managing the day-to-day front office operations and student services. This position reports to the Program Manager and is managed by the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Welcome students, staff, visitors
    • Monitor door for security purposes
    • Answer, screen, and forward incoming phone calls, as well as take accurate messages.
    • Copy materials for teachers, tutors, and staff
    • Student registration
    • Student files
    • Student attendance
    • Student database: information and test scores
    • Tutor database: information and hours
    • Student recruitment database
    • Recruitment materials and mailings
    • Security of files and equipment
    • Communicate important information to students
    • Organization and storage of food.
    • Prepare breakfast and lunch for students.
    • Supervise and maintain the building/classrooms/common area.
    • Clear all garbage and recycle bins. Dispose of building garbage daily.
    • Wipe all tables, chairs, and counters at the end of the day.
    • Report to the Program Manager when kitchen and building supplies are low.

Qualifications

    • High School/GED/HSE required; Associate Degree preferred.
    • At least 1 year experience as a Receptionist
    • Experience working with a diverse population
    • Bilingual – English and Spanish
    • Strong computer skills- especially MS Office and Google Workspace
    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong multitasking skills and the ability to manage interruptions efficiently.
    • Strong organizational skills
    • A professional, welcoming, and punctual demeanor.
    • Self-starter, work independently, and identify more effective methods of work operation
    • Ministerial approach

Work Conditions

Physical Requirements

    • Ability to sit for long periods of time and climb stairs.
    • Must be able to travel to on-site locations.
    • Ability to lift up to 15 lbs. occasionally.

Daily Work Schedule

    • Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM

Compensation and Benefits

    • Salary: $30,000 annually, part-time (28 hours/week).

Paid Time Off Policy

    • Paid Time Off (PTO) provides you with the flexibility to use your time off to meet your personal needs: vacation, illness, medical appointments, personal business or emergencies. Hourly employees will earn one (1) hour of Paid Time Off for every 40 hours worked, up to 40 hours in a 12-month period. The accrual of paid time off begins upon the start of employment. Accrued paid time off can be used after 90 days of employment. PTO hours will be forfeited if not used during the calendar year.
