If volunteering with us is something that interests you, you can proceed to the next step!

As previously stated, completing tutor training is required. There are two training options available, but you only need to complete one. You can start the training whenever you are ready and work through it at your own pace.

Training Option #1 –
Literacy Work’s ABE Tutor Training

12-Hour Training. Complete at your own pace online. Half the training is a self-paced online course and the other half is live training via Zoom.

Below are the steps to register for the tutor training.

1. Go to https://www.litworks.org/tutor-training
2. Scroll down to “Ready to Register?”
3. Click on “Register for ABE.”
4. Complete the registration form and submit it.
Note: Under organization, please list: The Learning Center/House of Connections
5. Once it’s submitted, Keighty Ward from Literacy Works will follow up with you via email or you will receive an automatic email with all the training modules.

When you complete the training, you will receive a certificate of completion.

Training Option #2 – Illinois Secretary of State Adult Literacy Volunteer Tutor Training
10-Hour Training. Complete at your own pace online.

You will complete the following 13 lessons:

To initiate the Secretary of State training, please click on the first lesson. To progress through the training, click the “Next Page” button at the bottom of each page. If you encounter a writing prompt, take a moment to reflect on it, and then continue with the lesson. There is no need to write and submit an answer.

After reading each lesson, there will be a “Learning Check” that you must complete. Once done, click “View Your Scores” and print or take a screenshot of every “Learning Check” lesson result, similar to the example below. At the end of the training, please email Miriam Gonzalez, the Program Coordinator, at mgonzalez@tlcchicago.org all of your results or bring the printed results to your first day of tutoring. There is no certificate provided upon completion.
